Pentane blowing. 25+ years of doing it right.

We blow our polyurethane foams with pentane rather than water because it produces better foam. Finer cells, more consistent density, lower thermal conductivity. Non-ozone-depleting. 25+ years of permitted operation — in the parts we mold, those differences show up in service.

Pentane vs water-blown

What pentane does that water doesn't.

Most commodity polyurethane foam is blown with water, which reacts with isocyanate to produce CO₂ as the blowing gas. That works — but CO₂ forms larger, more irregular cells. Pentane is a physical blowing agent: it's dissolved in the polyol blend, then vaporizes during the exothermic cure. The result is a finer, more uniform cell structure with better dimensional and density control.

Why not every shop uses it

Pentane is a flammable hydrocarbon. Handling it requires an explosion-rated blend room with Class I Division 1 electrical, vapor recovery, and — in Michigan — a Title V air permit that takes 18 months or more to obtain. For many molders, the capital and compliance cost doesn't pencil out at their volume. Comcast Urethane made the investment because the foam quality difference is worth it. We've operated under Michigan Title V air permit with explosion-rated equipment for 25+ years, with ongoing regulatory compliance.

Integral skin

More consistent skin formation — maintenance-free surface

Pentane's controlled expansion gives us more predictable skin/core transitions, especially in thicker parts or parts with varying wall sections. The resulting integral skin is tough, durable, and maintenance-free — no upholstery, no coating, no secondary finish required.

Flexible foam

Tighter density consistency

For seating and medical positioning applications where a specific IFD target matters, pentane-blown foam holds density spec across a batch more consistently than water-blown.

Alternative Agents

Non-ozone, non-flammable options available

For applications where pentane is not appropriate — compliance requirements, shipping classifications, or specific end-use specs — we can formulate with alternative non-ozone-depleting, non-flammable blowing agents. Ask us about your specific situation.

Quality note

Pentane blowing is part of our standard process — not a premium add-on.

We don't upsell pentane. Our standard formulations are pentane-blown where appropriate. If you need water-blown for cost or compliance reasons specific to your application, we'll tell you. But if you're not asking, the foam we mold is already getting the benefit.
